Tags: , , , , , ,

Last time, On Air with Kenny Jones – the crew was able to track down the inventor of the south african noise maker that has been doing everyone’s head.  The Vuvuzela has fans, officials, at home viewers and even players searching for ear plugs since the opening kick off at the Fifa World Cup 2010.

Who knows how they do it, but the managed to get Frank Maakay on the hook.  Here’s what he had to say…

Frank claims to have invented the noise maker back in the 1960s.  As for those who are complaining about the sound, he says you should embrace the sound as it is part of the unique experience of South African football.

Mr. Maake also said the Vuvuzela is the soundtrack to the World Cup 2010.  Yes it is…and it may be the last one you ever hear!

Next week…the inventor of the ear plug – which are completely sold out in South Africa.

Wake up On Air with Kenny Jones, weekdays from 7-11am exclusively on Radio Indigo 91.9.

what’s a vuvuzela?

Tags: , , ,

On Air with Kenny Jones we spoke about the Vuvuzela – if you aren’t familiar with it – it’s the unrelenting foghorn-esque noise you been hearing while attempting to watch the World Cup games.

It’s a three-foot-long plastic trumpet traditionally blown throughout games to create an atmosphere.  I’ll say it’s created an atmosphere – one where I can’t hear the person sitting next to me watching the game…hell, I can’t even hear myslf think!

In case you were wondering, here’s what one of these bad boys looks like…

She seems to be enjoying it, right.

The South African instrument pumps out sound up to 130 decibels — that’s 10 decibels above the human pain threshold — they also are associated with causing hearing loss and communication problems on the pitch.  They’ve got fans, players, commentators, at home viewers and officials up in arms.

The World Cup Executives & desicion makers are meeting to discuss a possible ban of the vuvuzela – But how do you ban something that’s native to the country you’re playin’ your tournament in?  It seems like the indigenous noise makers are here to stay.

It’s even spark its very own spin off event – check it out…

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.  Get your vuvuzela TODAY!!!  I wanna get 10 to 12 fans of the show to come into the studio every morning and sound their vuvuzelas everytime I crack the mic!  I’m trying to “create and atmosphere”!  Problem is, there aren’t 10 to 12 fans of the show :(
