Around The World…For Free!

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Today On Air with Kenny Jones – we’re having a very special guest in studio – his name is Jeff Schroeder. He was the fan favorite on the American Version of Big Brother - he and his lovely lady Jordan were also a contestants on The Amazing Race – now he’s part of a fully “interactive” reality show created by cbs.com.

The reality TV star is attempting to travel around the world in 100 days…the catch – he’ll have nothing more than the clothes on his back, a backpack and the help of an online community.  Where he goes and how he gets there is yet to be determined – but at least he won’t be alone.

You can track him every step of the way by logging onto cbs.com.

You can watch him every step of the way, offering tips, travel photos and even a helping hand.  Sign up now for Around the World For Free updates to stay apprised of Jeff’s whereabouts!

We’re also looking for “must-see” spots in b’lore for Jeff to experience.  Please post if you’ve got a Bangalore hot spot for Jeff to check out while he’s here on the Subcontinent.  We’d really appreciate your suggestions.

Also let us know if there is someone you know anywhere else in India or in the world that might be willing to put this penniless (or should I say rupee-less) nomad for a night or two.

come on – are you telling me you can resist that smile…and I mean that in the most heterosexual way possible.

Have a listen to what happened when Jeffrey stopped by the Radio Indigo studios…

rickshaw ruckus in b’lore

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

this morning – on air with kenny jones, we got word that there was a rally organized by the rickshaw drivers union.  the newspaper said 50,000 of the 80,000 riks on the road will be shut down.  they seemed to be upset over the transpo department telling them the need to replace their 3 pane windscreens with single panes.

this replacement glass will run the drivers/owners anywhere from 5-7,000 rs.  this is not the first time the transportation dept told the auto drivers they need to conform – not to long ago they were instructed that their autos must be painted green & yellow or yellow & black.

yeah, yeah, yeah – in know wht you’re thinkin’, someone probably got a deal on single peice windshields and the transpo dept is gettin’ a cut – but that can’t be proved!  but in the event of an accident, the single panes are supposed to be safer for the passenger.  and it’s us that is gonna end up paying for those new windscreens in the end anyway…so what’s the problem?

here’s what the on air contingent had to say about the rick drivers…

it was amazing to learn that there is a glimmer of hope for us poor souls having to get rides off the ruthless rickshaw drivers.  although i’ve never seen one, i’m told the elusive honest auto rickshaw driver does exist.  in our plight to find this endangered species we stumbled across a government system which i believe 99.99% of Bengaluru is unaware of.  have a look at this…

The System

Note the vehicle number (KA-XX-YY-ZZZZ) and email the details to transcom@kar.nic.in. Based on the prefix XX (for example KA-01), complaint will be sent to one of the ten RTO offices in Bangalore and adjacent taluk areas.

Alternatively, one can also call these offices at the number given below based on the vehicle number prefix and directly lodge a complaint.

Vehicle Prefix (KA-XX) Bangalore location Phone number

  • - KA-01 Koramangala 080-25533525
  • - KA-02 Rajajinagar 080-23324104
  • - KA-03 Indiranagar 080-25254310
  • - KA-04 Yeshwantpur 080-23376039
  • - KA-05 Jayanagar 080-26630989
  • - KA-41 Gyanabharthi 080-28602833
  • - KA-50 Yelahanka 080-28561366
  • - KA-51 Electronic City 080-25735522
  • - KA-52 NeelaMangala 08234-285598
  • - KA-53 KR Puram 080-25617951

Once the complaint is received at the corresponding office, a notice is issued to the address of the vehicle’s registered owner, requiring him/her to turn up at the RTO office within 7 working days. Every RTO has about 10 IMV’s (Inspector of Motor Vehicles) who seize the vehicles which don’t report to the RTO.

The penalty levied from the auto-waalas is rs.100 under section 200.

The various offences among others for which one can lodge a complaint

  • - Refusal to come to destination (Any destination!!!)
  • - Demanding excess fare
  • - Using rough language
  • - Cheat the public, for e.g. taking longer routes.
  • - Faulty Meter

There is also a helpline number - 080-22353785 available Monday – Saturday from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm on which one can call to lodge complaints.

The numbers speak for itself
I was shocked when I found that the Koramangala RTO office received only 5 complaints a month. With over 1,00,000 autos plying on Bangalore roads, shouldn’t it be like 5 complaints a minute?

What’s wrong with the system?

  • - Lack of Awareness among the Bangalore citizens
  • - The system is inefficient in data gathering- emails or phone calls cannot be stored and processed properly, leading to ineffective use of these complaint data.
  • - Converting these complaints into notices issued to vehicle owners is still a manual process
  • - Limited government officials to handle

So, will our impatience always have to take a backseat?  Can something be done to improve/compliment the system to make it more effective? Will we get a better platform to raise our voices democratically?  so the next time you get the business from one of these dudes, you’ve got to take action!

good luck bangalore – be vigilant!  i beseech you…what ever the hell that is?

longer nightlife in bangalore?

Tags: , , , , , , ,

today on air with kenny jones – the crew found an article about the chance of the 11 o’clock deadline being relaxed a bit.

apparently the karnataka government’s recent proposal to extend the 11.30 pm deadline for 5-star hotels and other eateries has been welcomed by bangaloreans. keshav krishnamurty and divya roy spoke to kripal amanna, the editor of food lovers magazine, to find out what a decision to allow nightlife til 2 am would mean to bangalore. here’s what they had to say…

“I moved to bangalore from mumbai. when I was there, i used to think of bangalore as a happening place. but, since then, there has been a clampdown, and the city is no longer a ‘happening’ place. business groups as well as the rest of the population do more than just transact business. people who come to the city, even if it is just for a while, take back a little of the city with them. relaxing the deadline would help. the extended deadline can help you do a lot more in the evening, and plan things better for the evening.”

makes sense to me. check out what the on air contingent had to say about the possibility of relaxing the deadline…

thoughts, comments, concerns? please feel free to post your takes below.

i’m certain an extension of the deadline would help the nightlife in bangalore. there’s one more thing i’m certain of too…i won’t feel like i’m in gradeschool and have to race home because i’ve got an 11:30 curfew!

we’re all adults here – i think we’re responsible enough to manage the proper timings of pubs, clubs and restaurants. After all, it works in other places in this country and most…

EVERYWHERE ELSE ON THE PLANET!!!

i’ve also learned that we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up – cuz this subject pops up every year and nothing ever happens. so keep you fingers crossed that something actually happens this time around. and until it does remember when 11 o’clock rolls around, you don’t have to go home…but you cant stay here.
